On Nov 9, 135th birth
anniversary of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal the poet of the East in Pakistan, was observed with traditional zeal and respect. Public
holiday was announced throughout the country on this occasion.
Special programmes
relating to the poetry, life, achievements and ideas of Allama Mohammad Iqbal (November 9, 1877 – April 21, 1938) was broadcasted in the all
national channels of Pakistan and print media published special editions.
National flag was hoisted on all principal government buildings.
Educational, cultural and
literary societies had chalked out different programmes to mark the day in an
appropriated manner and pay tribute to the great poet who proposed the idea of
a separate homeland for the Muslims of subcontinent.
Iqbal was a great thinker,
philosopher and politician of the sub-continent. His famous books of poetry are
Rumuz-i-Bekhudi, Bal-i-Jibril, Payam-i-Mashriq, Zabor-i-Ajam, Bang-i-Dara,
Asrar-e-Khudi, Zarb-I Kalim and
Armaghan-e-Higaz. He is one of the most important figures in Urdu literature;
his poetry is in Urdu and Persian. His books have also been translated in other
languages like English and Arabic etc.
With his poetry Allama
Iqbal is appreciated as a prominent classical poet by American, Pakistani,
British, Iranian, Indian and other international scholars of literature and
philosophers. In 1922, he was awarded by King George V, giving him the title
“Sir”.
Allama iqbal presented the
idea of Pakistan in one of his most famous speeches in the League’s December
1930 session when he was the president of the All India Muslim League. He was
very close to the founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
